How to Apply EPDM Granules Evenly Around Pools (No Falling Off)

May. 11, 2026
EPDM rubber granules are one of the safest, most durable surfacing materials for swimming pool surrounds.

They offer great slip resistance, soft cushioning, fast drainage, and strong resistance to pool chemicals and sunlight.

But poor installation often leads to two big problems: uneven surfaces and loose, falling granules.

This short, clear guide will show you how to apply EPDM granules smoothly and firmly—so they stay in place for years.

Why EPDM Granules Work for Pool Areas

EPDM stands up well to wet conditions, chlorine splashes, and daily foot traffic.

Unlike concrete or tiles, it reduces slip risks and fall injuries around the pool. It also drains water quickly, so no puddles form on the surface.

The only condition: it must be applied correctly.

Step 1: Prepare the Base Properly

A clean, solid base is the first rule to prevent granules from falling off.

• Remove all dust, oil, moss, and loose pieces

• Fix cracks and level uneven spots

• Make sure the surface is completely dry

• Do not apply on wet, rainy, or cold days

If the base is weak or dirty, the EPDM layer will separate quickly.

Step 2: Mix Materials in the Right Ratio

Use a pool-grade polyurethane binder and high-quality EPDM granules.

Follow the standard mixing ratio: 1 part binder to 8–10 parts EPDM granules (by weight)
• Mix slowly and evenly
• Make sure every granule is coated
• Do not add extra water or thinner
Too little binder = granules fall out.
Too much binder = sticky, uneven surface.

Step 3: Spread and Level Evenly
Pour the mixed EPDM onto the prepared base. Spread it smoothly with a trowel or straight edge.

Keep the thickness consistent:

usually 8–10 mm for pool surrounds.

Work at a steady speed.

Avoid thick and thin patches.

Trim edges and corners neatly for a clean finish.

Step 4: Compact for Strong Bonding
After spreading, roll or tamp the surface firmly.Compression locks the granules together and sticks them tightly to the base.
This step is the most important for preventing future loosening and falling.

Pay attention to corners and hard-to-reach spots.

Make sure the whole surface is evenly compacted.

Step 5: Cure Fully Before Use
Let the EPDM surface cure undisturbed. Wait at least 48–72 hours. Do not walk on it, splash water, or clean it during curing.

Full curing lets the binder harden completely, Rushing this step will cause granules to fall off easily.

Simple Maintenance to Keep It Durable
• Rinse regularly with clean water
• Avoid strong acid or alkaline cleaners
• Fix small loose areas immediately
• Keep sharp heavy objects off the surface

With basic care, your EPDM pool surround will stay even, firm, and safe for many years.
